MERCER COUNTY, N.J. – The second of two national selection regattas will be held June 7-9 on Lake Mercer in Mercer County, N.J. The national selection regattas are the beginning steps towards making the 2002 World Championships Team, which will compete at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships Sept. 15-22 in Seville, Spain.
National Selection Regatta (NSR) II will include races in six boat classes – the men and women’s double sculls, men and women’s pair, and men and women’s lightweight double sculls. The men’s double sculls competition has the most entries with 28 tandems scheduled to compete. The men’s pair has 22 entries, while the men’s lightweight double sculls field consists of 17 boats. On the women’s side, 16 double sculls are scheduled to compete. The women’s lightweight double sculls competition has 12 boats entered, while the women’s pair had nine entries.
The selection procedures for making the 2002 World Championships Team in each boat-class depends on whether or not that boat category is an Olympic-class event or a non-Olympic event. Winners in all six events at NSR II will be given the opportunity to race at the Zurich Rowing World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland, in July. If the boat places in the top six in Lucerne and meets the designated time standard at the National Team Time Standard Regatta on August 14, the boat will represent the United States at the world championships. If the boat does not place in the top six or does not compete in Lucerne, the event will be contested at the 2002 National Team Trials August 7-12 in Princeton, N.J.
